Tributes have been made to a Wirral-born police detective who passed away following an illness.

Cheshire Police announced on Tuesday, September 13 that DS Mike Beamish, a serving officer in the county, had died.

Although understood to have been living in Chester, he went to school in Wirral and was well known in the Bromborough area.

Sharing the news on social media, a Cheshire Police spokesman said: "It is with great sadness that we have learned of the death of DS Mike Beamish, a serving officer here in Cheshire who has passed away following an illness.

"Our thoughts are with his wife, daughters and son, friends and colleagues."

Mike attended Christ the King Primary School in Bromborough before going on to Wirral Grammar School for Boys. He excelled as a sportsman and played football for Wirral Boys.

He was offered professional terms by Wrexham AFC when he was 16-years-old but chose to stay on at Wirral.

Known as 'Beamo' to his large group of friends, he was just as successful at rugby, going on to captain Old Wirralians' first team.

Mike had just completed 20 years' service for the Police.

Following the announcement, former colleagues, friends and members of the public shared their tributes and messages of support for the family.

Former colleague Henry Platten said: "An incredible detective and true gentleman.

"Heartbroken to hear this sad news. I’m honoured Beamo was my tutor in CID. Thoughts and prayers for his family."

Old schoolfriend, Lee Wilson said: "So many brilliant memories all the way back to school with him.

"A truly great friend who will be a massive loss to all his family, friends and colleagues."

Retired Detective Superintendent, Sarah Pengelly said: "Our blue line has become a little bit thinner today.

"I’m terribly sorry to hear that Mike has passed away - he was a fabulous guy, fantastic detective and a great leader.

"He will be missed and never forgotten."
