A special event aiming to bring employers, local workers and firms together is taking place in Birkenhead tomorrow as part of ambitious regeneration plans for the area's town centre.

Wirral 'Getting Connected' - taking place at The Hive in Bright Street, Birkenhead on Tuesday from 1pm to 4pm -  will give local workers and companies the chance to find out more about employment and work opportunities as regeneration moves ahead.

If you are interested in attending, register your interest at: https://forms.office.com/r/ZMHXfMKHp5

The event is intended to make sure Wirral-based job seekers and companies are connected with Morgan Sindall Construction, the main contractor and its supply chain partners who will deliver the first two office schemes, in the new 'commercial district' development in Birkenhead.

Initial work in the town centre will see construction of the first two office buildings, expected to start later this year, following clearance of the former site of Milton Pavements as the work of the Wirral Growth Company, a 50:50 joint venture between Wirral Council and the UK’s leading urban regenerator, Muse Developments, moves at pace.

The town centre plans are part of the council’s wider Birkenhead 2040 Framework, a twenty-year plan which sets out the most radical proposals for the town since the 1947 Town Plan.

This will see Birkenhead’s revitalised town centre re-connected through the provision of cycleways and new footpaths with the amazing opportunities along the Mersey waterfront, and the creation of family-friendly neighbourhoods, with beautiful green public spaces.

The event will also see a range of support agencies there to help local people seeking employment, including DWP, Wirral Council, Involve Northwest, Wirral Met College, and Wirral Chamber representatives who will be in attendance to talk to employers and young people about the Kickstart Scheme that provides six month funding to employers to create paid work placements for eligible young people.

Trades represented on the day will include scaffolding, plumbing, roofing, bricklaying, fencing, painting and decorating, flooring, joinery and electrical engineering, among many others.

Any young person aged between 16 -24 and currently on Universal Credit is encouraged to come along to Wirral ‘Getting Connected’ to also find out about and apply for the hundreds of Kickstart opportunities across a range of sectors that are currently available in Wirral.

Representatives from Morgan Sindall Construction and its supply chain will be on hand to discuss the numerous employment, training and apprenticeship opportunities which will be created through upcoming projects.

Local construction businesses can also find out how to join the Chamber’s thriving construction forum that provides a network to build meaningful business contacts within the sector.

Chair of Wirral Council's economy, regeneration and development committee, Cllr Tony Jones, said: "The aim is to ensure that as many of the benefits from the massive regeneration programme currently under way are retained within the borough as part of the council's community wealth building programme.

"This is a key council policy which is focused on ensuring wealth generated in Wirral stays in the area.

“We are on the brink of a truly key moment as we press ahead with the most ambitious regeneration in decades and this is a chance to play your part in building our borough for current and future generations, as well as benefiting from the opportunities such major regeneration will offer."

Mike Horner, development director at Wirral Growth Company, said: "Regeneration is about more than just the physical spaces, it's about creating opportunities for the local community that deliver long term benefit and help local people to feel as excited for the future of the town as we do.

"That's what we’re doing in Birkenhead town centre and we’re looking forward to being able to deliver real social value through the job creation at the site and the wider economic benefits that it could have on the borough as a whole.

"We can’t wait for work to start on site in the coming months and would welcome as many local people to the scheme as possible.”

Gill Roberts, Morgan Sindall Construction’s social value manager for the North West, said "We're really looking forward to hosting this event and engaging with suppliers and job seekers specifically in the Wirral area.

"This is a very exciting project which is key to generating long term growth and prosperity on the Wirral.

"It will create job opportunities for people from all backgrounds, regardless of experience. I would encourage as many people as possible to come to The Hive on Tuesday and find out how they can get involved.”
