A heavy storm has caused major disruption in Birkenhead and surrounding areas this afternoon.

Businesses have reported that Borough Road at Charing Cross was under two foot of water at one point, with offices on the roadside flooding out.

Staff at GB Tours say they are working hard to protect computers and other IT equipment from serious damage.

Other areas of Wirral have also been severely affected.

Water has made its way into the aisles of Prenton Sainsbury's and has flooded the playing field in Higher Bebington.

Further reports say that the build up of water on Borough Road has now dispersed since the storm moved away.

But the flooding has affected trains and roads in Wirral.

Merseyrail has Tweeted: "Services on the New Brighton line are suspended. Services on the West Kirby line will start & terminate at Bidston.

"Rail replacement buses have been requested."

The M53 is also understood to be down to one lane between West Kirby and Clatterbridge junctions.
