A passionate performer and war veteran has celebrated his 100th birthday surrounded by his family in Wirral.

John Lund, a Moreton resident of more than 60 years, turned 100 on Tuesday, August 10 and celebrated the milestone by indulging in his passion for performance with a family sing along.

As an active performer, John has taken centre stage with roles in Shakespearean plays and as a member of musical groups including The Castle Singers, Memory Lane Singers and The Twirlies.

John said: "The celebrations were absolutely wonderful.

"All the world's a stage and all the men and women merely players."

In his younger years, John served in the Second World War after enlisting in 1942 to the West Yorkshire Regiment and went on to serve overseas in Austria and Italy.

His plan to train as a doctor was disrupted by the war, but he later became an entomologist for the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.

Alongside his career and stage roles, John had four children - Christopher, Rosemary, Peter and Jenny who threw him a garden party along with his nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

John’s son, Peter Lund said: "For us, our dad is the last of a whole generation, and a link to a way of life that is slipping into history.

"He has always been a colourful, enthusiastic head of the family, and still a rallying point for four generations."

His other son, Christopher Lund added: "It is wonderful that he could share the celebration of this day with his family who gave so much meaning to his life."
