At 8pm on Sunday, people across the country will collectively hold their breath and hope that England can finally win a major international football tournament for the first time in 55 years.

But one man and his wife in Bromborough village won't be hoping for a Three Lions triumph at all, as they have good reason to prefer the finesse of the Azzurri.

Paolo Masuzzo runs the Gossip coffee shop on Allport Lane with his wife Marzia, and the bona fide Italians have made Wirral their home for the last 23 years.

Paolo told the Globe: "I came here in the late 90s. I worked in the Romagna's restaurant for eight years and then I took over this one here because the owner sold up and retired. It's now been running for 15 years."

Regular customers at Gossip are all too aware of Paolo's love of football and his allegiance to Internazionale (Inter Milan), which he gets from his father, despite growing up in Sicily.

He said: "In Italy there is Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan - the three biggest teams. After you support a team from your own city, you normally support a big team as well. It works for all of Italy.

"My father was an Inter Milan fan and my brother, I choose them because I had no choices!"

The 52-year-old Sicilian is also a fan of Tranmere and proudly has photos of Rovers' famous playoff final victory over Newport County in 2019 on his coffee shop wall, a match he attended at Wembley Stadium.

Paolo has been watching all of the Euro 2020 matches throughout the tournament and likes what he has seen so far from his native Italians.

He said: "Fantastic. At the moment I think they have been the best team, up to when they played Spain.

"Spain were good in possession and we were a little bit low key, but we had our chances as well. I like (Marco) Verratti."

In his lifetime, Paolo has seen Inter win almost everything and Italy win the World Cup twice, but never the Euros, coming closest in 2000 when they were beaten by France with an extra time 'golden goal'.

When asked what he thought about England's performances he said: "Half and half. I liked them when they won 1-0 against Croatia but I didn't like them against Scotland or Czech Republic.

"I liked them against Ukraine and Denmark as well but they were lucky.

"England was the better team but it wasn't a penalty. No chance. He was already going down and then he touched him. Anyone can see that!

"I still wanted England to win. I said if Italy don't win the whole thing then I wanted England to win it.

"It's hard for me. 23 years here and now I go an support another team."

Despite his obvious allegiance to Italy, Paolo insists that he is relaxed about the final on Sunday and has enjoyed the banter with his customers.

He said: "If Italy win it's better for me, but if England win I don't mind. At least it's not France or Portugal or Spain.

"The customers have been taking the p****. If Italy win I think I will have to shut up!"

Nevertheless, the coffee shop owner is a predicting a 2-1 victory for the Azzurri on the night.

"If Italy win I hope they don't break my windows!", he added.
