Speeding motorists are a problem which many residents across Wirral would like to see addressed.

This is according to a recent study carried out by the Wirral Globe, which asked readers which roads they feel would benefit from a speed camera.

We had over 200 comments on our survey with a number of main roads being repeatedly flagged by readers.

Bayswater Road in Wallasey and Price Street in Birkenhead were among those featured frequently in our readers responses.

Nick Moxon-Brown said people on Bayswater Road are driving dangerously fast.

“BAYSWATER ROAD Wallasey, without a question!!! Morning and evening commutes are the main problem times, people drive dangerously too fast!!!”

Rachel Parker said cars waiting at the lights on Price Street in Birkenhead act like they are ‘waiting for the racing flag to wave them a start’.

Jen Curl agreed and commented: “The amount of times I’ve been crossing Price Street with my kids and impatient people in their cars start beeping us or even worse speed through red lights. I’ve had to drag my son back from being hit!!”

Roads with bends on were also flagged as a problem area for many.

Shell Hyland commented saying: “People use Braken Lane as a cut through and nearly take you out on the bend!”

Rake Lane in Wallasey was another.

Karen Denheyer said: “On the bend outside the cemetery gates. The speed some drivers take that bend is frightening!”

Kiri Griffiths responded saying Corporation Road in Birkenhead is in desperate need of a speed camera.

She said: “Corporation Road needs one. Speed of some of the cars flying down there is ridiculous. Along with Whetstone Lane especially during school drop offs and pickups.”

Diane Gilmartin saying Corporation Road between Patten Street and St James Church was ‘ridiculous’.

She said: “People use it as a racetrack to avoid lights on Laird Street flying up and down at ridiculous speeds. With all the new houses in the area there are lot more people around too, please do something to calm the traffic on the route!”

Other notable recommendations include Park Road North, Thingwall Road Irby, Broadway Avenue, Manor Drive, Upton, and Upton Bypass.

What did the police say in response?

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police Road Safety Partnership said: “We are constantly reviewing our camera site locations. You can find our current locations on Keeping You Safe - Merseyside Road Safety Partnership.

“We deploy our mobile camera vans to locations that have been identified as hotspot areas based on KSI data and attendance requests from members of the public and the local authority.

“Each area has to be risk assessed, resulting in us being unable to deploy in some areas where we would like to. This approach is also applied to our static sites where the positioning is determined by local authority input.

“In difficult locations, we can often deploy ‘The Ranger’ – speed detection equipment operated by officers.

“We always encourage members of the public who have concerns to get in touch with us and help to build the clearest possible picture for deployment.”
