A BLAZE that took hold at a scrap yard in Rock Ferry at the weekend is believed to have started accidentally, an investigation has concluded.

Six fires engines were called to the fire in a scrap yard close to the junction of Ebenezer Street and Russell Road at around 3pm on Saturday.

A number of cars were ablaze, with smoke billowing into the skies.

Nearby residents and businesses were told to keep their windows and doors closed due to smoke from the fire.

The fire was, in the main, extinguished by shortly after 4pm, with crews carrying out damping down operations.

Merseyside Police were also in attendance to manage the outer cordon.

Fire crews left the scene at 5.25pm.
