New leisure attractions, a hotel and apartments are set to replace a New Brighton icon.

Demolition work on New Palace and Adventureland, a stalwart of the New Brighton coastal scene, could begin as soon as September.

For many, this will come as sad news, but there are bold plans in place to ensure there will still be many reasons to visit the seaside resort.

A spokesperson for developer Viking New Brighton said it is working with an established company in the entertainment business, which is set to invest in 80,000 square feet of leisure space.

If all goes well, the new attractions set to take over from New Palace and Adventureland, which are still to be decided on, could be in place as soon as next summer.

Viking New Brighton said this leisure plan will be prioritised ahead of proposals for a new hotel.

Apartments will also be built on some of the space vacated by New Palace and Adventureland, but they will be constructed in a second phase of the project.

All of these plans still leave over 100,000 square feet of space remaining at the site, but Viking New Brighton said many companies are interested in moving into the remaining space.

Viking New Brighton’s spokesperson said: “[The entertainment company] realises that the New Brighton resort needs a new identity, to come into the 21st century.

“We have said we won’t close New Palace and Adventureland during the summer season, so it [the closure] will be in September at the earliest.”

“Then work will start on the demolition and regeneration. I know the priority of Wirral Council is to have leisure facilities back as well as a hotel.

“Leisure is the priority and it will be the first thing to be built. The earliest it could be done is the middle of summer 2022 if everything goes to plan.”

Reflecting on the state of New Brighton in recent years, the spokesperson added: “New Brighton has been forgotten for many, many years, but now people are actually throwing their hat into the ring to redevelop the promenade.”
