A woman who had not used public transport for two years due to illness was helped by a group of young lads at a train station during her day trip to Liverpool.

Avril Griffiths from Bromborough had been visiting a friend in Liverpool on Saturday, 22 May when she began to feel anxious about her journey home.

After her friend walked her down to the platform at Central Station the group of boys spotted her and jumped out of their seats to help her.

She said: “This was my first proper trip out because I’ve been dealing with illness since 2019 and then the pandemic happened.

“I also had a stroke in April which has damaged my right leg, so I have to walk with a stick.

“As soon as the lads saw me, they all jumped up to offer me their seats and one even tapped a nearby fella on the shoulder who had a big rucksack so he wouldn’t knock into me.”

The boys then proceeded to stay and chat with Avril.

They helped her up onto the train and continued to stay with her for the train journey making sure she was okay.

She said: “Four of the lads got off at Bebington and I was left with a young lad called Tommy Smith.

“He took my shopping and my arm and asked the conductor to wait whilst he helped me off the train at Bromborough Rake.

“My right leg has been nerve damaged for quite a while and the step off the train was quite deep so it was lovely to have the support.”

Avril was touched by the act of kindness from the boys so reached out on Facebook to try and track down the boys who helped her and share her experience with the Wirral community.

She said: “I’ve managed to find three of the mothers who were all really chuffed and proud to find out their sons had helped me.

“Normally when most people see a group of young kids they turn and walk the other way, but this just proves there’s a lot of good kids out there.

“Those lads being there and being so nice, chatty and warm really did make a massive difference and put me at ease.”
