BIDSTON'S iconic observatory will provide the stunning backdrop for an open air cinema this year.

Tickets for the event, which takes place from July 2-4 and aims "to curate new waves of cinematic experience", will be on sale from Monday.

The schedule for the weekend is, as follows:

Friday, July 2: 4-6pm: Song of the Sea (Cert PG).

An enchanting Irish animation about Ben and little sister Saoirse – the last Seal-child – who embark on a fantastic journey across a fading world of ancient legend and magic in an attempt to return to their home by the sea.

Friday, July 2: 7.30-10pm: All Light, Everywhere.

Theo Anthony’s award winning documentary explores the personal and philosophical relationships between cameras and weaponry.

Saturday, July 3: 6.30-10pm: John Carpenter's cult horror classic The Fog (15).

In the film, Ghosts of the victims of a shipwreck near a tiny Californian coastal town return 100 years after the event to get their revenge, as a strange, glowing fog sweeps over the area.

Sunday, July 4: 6.30-10pm – The Aquatic Life with Steve Zissou (15).

In this comedy-drama, Bill Murray plays renowned and eccentric oceanographer Steve Zissou, who has sworn vengeance upon the rare ‘jaguar shark’ that devoured his best friend and chief diver Esteban.

A spokesperson for the event said: "The Observatory Cinema is a temporary open air cinema atop Bidston Hill, which we look forward to hosting.

"We would love the people of Birkenhead and Bidston to book tickets and come visit.

"On site, you will find food and drinks vendors, portaloos and accessible areas.

"This event is outdoors, so please dress appropriately – we recommend that you bring your own blankets and cushions to make the most of this experience.

"We have taken into account government guidance relating to social distancing, and will safely accommodate you and your group from arrival through to departure.

"Tickets are priced at £20 per plot, and each plot comfortably seats up to six people.

"If you have any access requirements, we are happy to reserve an accessible space for you – just email access@andfestival.org.uk before you purchase your ticket.

The event is supported using public funding by Arts Council England, Wirral Council and Film Hub North with further support from Bidston Observatory Artistic Research Centre.

*The weekend before the open air cinema event takes place, there will be a tour for single people over 60. 

The Tour at Four, taking place on June 27 will feature an hour-long tour of the building with tea and biscuits after and a chance to chat and meet other singles and heritage fans. Suggested donation of £2.50.
