WIRRAL motorists are being urged to focus on their speed in order to save lives as part of an international road safety campaign.

As part of Global Road Safety Week Merseyside Police's force's Roads Policing Unit will be carrying out a number of operations and activities across the region to spread the message to all road users: "Slow down and save lives".

During the week-long operation, which ends on Sunday, police will be reminding drivers to drive within speed limits to save lives and protect all who use them, especially the most vulnerable, including pedestrians, cyclists, children and older people.

Police will also be visiting schools to talk to children about the importance of road safety.

The enforcement week will also cover eScooters, in-car safety including seat belts and mobile phones, pedestrian safety and drink and drug driving.

Inspector Carl Mc Nulty, from Merseyside Police Roads policing unit, said: "Serious and fatal collisions have devastating effects for all of those involved.

"We carry out enforcement on our roads on a daily basis and we hope that this week raises awareness and encourages people to think about their actions and the devastating effect they can have on others."

Sarah English from the Merseyside Road Safety Partnership said: "Ultimately we want to encourage people to drive safely and within the speed limits, so that everyone can stay as safe as possible on the roads.

"There are no excuses for dangerous behaviour whilst driving."
