Keith Hill has spoken for the first time after he was sacked as manager of Tranmere Rovers last week.

The former Prenton Park boss led the Birkenhead club to the Papa John's Trophy Final and secured a League Two play-off position on the final day of the season.

But a severe tail-off in form and apparent disunity in the the squad contributed to Chairman Mark Palios decided to relieve Hill of his duties as the team heads into the playoffs this week.

In a statement released by the League Manager's Association, Hill said: “Although disappointed by the timing of my exit, I am proud of what we have achieved as a team this season through hard work, team work and talent.

“I am grateful to Mark, Nicola and the board of directors for allowing me the opportunity to represent Tranmere Rovers FC as its Manager. It’s been a privilege.

“A big thank you has to go to the players for everything you have done both on the training pitch and on match days, in what has been a very difficult season. Your success has been amazing and I leave with some great memories and new friends for life.

“Thanks also goes to the football staff for all of their efforts, in supporting the team and for helping us to reach the Papa John’s Trophy Final at Wembley and the League Two Play-offs.

“Finally, thank you to all the campus and stadium staff for your support, especially Ida and Leroy, you are the pride and joy of this football club and it has been a pleasure working with you all.

“I have loved every minute of the experience and built some strong relationships across the club. I wish the staff, SWA (Super White Army) and the players continued success in the Play-Offs and beyond.”

Assistant manager Ian Dawes has been reinstalled as interim manager for the second time this season following Hill's departure, assisted by Andy Parkinson.

Dawes will face the media tomorrow ahead of Tranmere's crunch playoff semi-final first leg against Morecambe on Thursday evening at Prenton Park.

Around 3,400 Tranmere supporters will be able to attend the home fixture.
