Getting outside, especially as the weather brightens, is one of life’s simpler and more relaxing pleasures. During the pandemic, so, so many of us have turned to the great outdoors to unwind from the stresses of daily life.

This year, the theme for Mental Health Awareness Week (May 10-17) is, quite fittingly, ‘nature’.

It also coincides with May being a national awareness month for Walking! So, I’m putting the two together and encouraging Wirral residents to take advantage of all the wonderful beauty spots and green spaces that our borough has to offer.

Getting out for a walk can do wonders for our mental health, it’s also great low-impact exercise for many of us.

Research from mentalhealth.org.uk on the impacts of the pandemic showed going for walks outside was one of the top coping strategies in the UK, with 45% of people reporting that being in green spaces had been vital for their mental health.

Being outside is also one of the safest ways to catch up with family and friends during the pandemic.  Please be sure to follow these tips on doing so safely.

Think Patient, Kind, Safe:

  • (Be Patient) Our beauty spots are just that – beautiful!  If your favourite walk is busy, come back another time or try a new route and let others enjoy the scenery – it might be their favourite too.
  • (Be Kind) Many people have been shielding or nervous to go outside for a long time. Be mindful of those who might be building their walking confidence back up after lockdown. A smile goes a long way (even behind your face masks.)
  • (Be Safe) Nobody likes a space invader! Step to the side, let others past or make plenty of room – whatever you do, it all helps. And don’t forget hand sanitiser if you’re touching gates or stiles.

While you’re soaking up the fresh air, remember, even small contacts with nature can reduce feelings of social isolation and prevent stress. For more tips on enjoying nature during Mental Health Week, visit www.mentalhealth.org.uk
