A professor from Wallasey spoke on Viking heritage in Wirral as part of Wirral Libraries first online lecture.

Professor Steve Harding (University of Oslo and Nottingham) presented evidence to listeners that suggests that the Battle of Brunanburh AD937 took place in Wirral.

The lecture was part of Wirral Libraries annual April lectures where they bring in local and national speakers to talk on different topics of particular interest.

Steve, who is also a huge supporter of Tranmere Rovers, said: “It was a great honour when Diane Mitchell, Diane Moore and Kirsten Hume of Wirral Libaries approached me and I had no hesitation in accepting.”

This year the highly popular talks have been moved online because of coronavirus restrictions.

Steve said: “The talk was on something quite topical.

“Many locals are now aware of our strong Viking Heritage and most – not all – experts believe the famous Battle of Brunanburh involving Scots, Anglo-Saxons and Vikings, fighting on both sides, took place on Wirral.”

Steve presented evidence in the way of place names, personal name, criminal records, poems, archaeology, and DNA.

He said: “I think the continued discovery of key archaeological finds will eventually prove the location.”

The first online lecture also marked the retirement of Diane Moore who joined Wirral libraries at the age of 17 and has been theorganiser of the local history programme for over five years.

A spokesperson from Wirral Libraries said: “As a service, we are proud to be able to offer these local talks online to Wirral residents.

“These talks provide the opportunity for those attending to listen to local and national speakers on topics of particular interest.”
