WIRRAL could soon have its first veteran of the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq serving in the council chamber if a New Brighton candidate is elected in May.
Darren May served in overseas operations around the globe, including the middle east.
Brought up in New Brighton, Darren went on to serve in the RAF and also volunteered for many years with the air cadets to help develop and educate our teenagers and young adults.
Returning to New Brighton after active service, Darren settled into a civilian life, with hopes of starting a family.
He said: "Service in the RAF also included delivering many community projects on air bases, providing me with valuable experience and skills which I hope could be put to use as a local councillor.
"Working with communities, building team spirit and looking out for one another are the skills that could help our town, as we emerge from the pandemic.
"I'm also keen to increase Veterans support locally.
"When I left the RAF, I saw for myself how support for veterans languished behind other areas of the country, despite the best efforts of volunteers who haven't received the proper support locally.
"In times of crisis, we work best when we work together and that's what I would do if elected as councillor in New Brighton.
"That means making sure residents and businesses are consulted on changes to our community and the council makes the most of the opportunities that are coming for towns in the north."
The candidates standing for election in New Brighton on May 6 are:
- Moira Gommon (Green)
- Tony Jones (Labour)
- Adam Keenan (Liberal Democrats)
- Paul Martin (Labour)
- Darren May (Conservative)
- Tony Pritchard (Conservative)
- Charlie Smethurst (Liberal Democrats)
- Cynthia Stonall (Green)
Two councillors are to be elected
