A 58-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of affray, threats to kill and possession of a bladed article after an incident in Birkenhead earlier this evening.

At around 5.15pm, police received calls about a man on Cleveland Street, reportedly in possession of a knife and making threats towards members of the public.

Armed police were deployed and detained a man nearby.

He was arrested on suspicion of affray; threats to kill and possession of a bladed article and taken to a police station for questioning.

A Merseyside Police spokesperson told the Globe: "We have arrested a man on suspicion of various offences following an incident in Birkenhead.

"Nobody was injured and if you witnessed this incident or have any CCTV, dashcam or other footage please contact us via @MerPolCC or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 with reference 662.
