More parking spaces at Bromborough station after upgrade

The work, at Bromborough station, brings the total number of spaces to 136, including seven for disabled motorists.

It aims to address the overflow of cars parking on adjacent residential roads, as well as attracting new park and ride users to the station.

The upgrade, delivered by Liverpool City Region Combined Authority in partnership with Merseyrail, is one of many that aim to improve the city region's rail network and is funded as part of the authority's Sustainable Transport Enhancement Package Programme, which is part of the Local Growth Fund.

The extended car park isn't the only improvement at the station. Last year the footbridges were given a £1m overhaul by Network Rail with repairs to their structure, bringing them up to date and making them safe and reliable for passengers.

In the past five years, more than 1200 new car parking spaces have been created across the region,s rail network, including Birkenhead North, Spital and Bromborough, at Maghull North, Newton-Le-Willows and St Helens, taking the total number to around 6,500.

As part of the new trains programme, Merseytravel and Network Rail are working together to deliver a new substation and install cabling on site. This work is due to be completed later this year.

Wayne Menzies, assistant director for rail at Liverpool City Region Combined Authority said: "We're committed to working with partners to upgrade Park and Ride facilities across the Liverpool City Region.

"The work to increase the number of available parking spaces at Bromborough will help to ensure that more people have the option to use the rail network to access the city centre rather than doing so by car.

"Although this project was commissioned before the Coronavirus pandemic, infrastructure improvements like this are vital to developing the capacity and resilience of the city region's public transport network as lockdown restrictions ease and the economy restarts in earnest."

Jane English, deputy managing director at Merseyrail, said: "We welcome the expansion to the Park and Ride facility at Bromborough, helping to make catching the train as easy as possible for our customers and improving their door-to-door journeys.

"This expansion also further delivers on our shared commitment to reduce carbon emissions across the Liverpool City Region by encouraging more people to use public transport."

Liberal Democrat ward counciilor for the area, Phil Gilchrist, said: "The extension ought to reduce the stray parking that takes place in nearby roads. This was frustrating for residents and local shoppers.

"It will also provide an alternative to Eastham Rake . That car park draws people in from far away as Willaston and Hooton.

"Coupled with the new trains travel by local rail services will become even more attractive".
