National treasure Sir David Attenborough has given his support to attempts to protect and promote wildlife in Wirral, including at Hoylake beach.
Sir David, one of the world’s most respected environmentalists, responded to efforts being made to improve biodiversity and protect against the effects of climate change.
In 2019, Wirral council decided not to use pesticides on the sands at Hoylake beach. The natural grasses that have been growing there since have become home to rare plants and birds.
His intervention came after Wirral Council Chair of the Environment, Climate emergency and Transport Committee, Cllr Liz Grey, wrote to him explaining the efforts that had been made to improve biodiversity in Hoylake and elsewhere in the borough.
In response to her letter, Sir David wrote: “Thank you for all you are doing to help the natural world."
Cllr Grey said she was over the moon to receive the handwritten reply.
She said: “Sir David Attenborough is a hero of young and old alike. He has been behind some of the greatest wildlife programming ever made and improved millions of people’s understating of the natural world.
“He has influenced world leaders’ approach to climate change and the threat it poses to life on this planet.
“For him to endorse the efforts we have been making not only to protect our local environment but to make it a more diverse eco-system in which wildlife can thrive is fantastic, and for me validates what we have been trying to achieve.
"He’s the most respected voice in the world on these issues, and to have his support for our efforts is both inspiring and humbling.”
The veteran environmental campaigner and broadcaster has devoted his entire career to the protection of nature and wildlife.
He presented landmark BBC nature series Blue Planet and has spoken to world leaders about the plight of the seas and oceans, urging politicians to prioritise and restore natural ecosystems and combat climate change.
Sir David visited Wirral in September 2019 to speak at the naming ceremony for the £200m polar research ship christened in his honour.
The famous BBC broadcaster and naturalist was praised for his work to champion the environment and combat climate change by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge as they named the ship “The RRS Sir David Attenborough” at Cammell Laird shipyard.
