Super White Army supporters have been given a slither of hope that they might get to see their team play at Wembley this year after all.

Tranmere are due to face Sunderland in the Papa John's Trophy final on Sunday, March 14 after beating League One Oxford United 2-0 in the semifinal of the EFL competition last Tuesday (February 16).

The Wembley showpiece is due to be played behind close doors, in line with current Government coronavirus restrictions, but following Prime Minister Boris Johnson's announcement on Monday that supporters are set to be allowed back into stadiums from May 17, a rethink has been ignited at Prenton Park.

Rovers co-owner and vice chair Nicola Palios confirmed via social media on Monday evening that the club have formally requested that the final is now moved back until after May 17, to allow supporters to attend the match.

She said: "Would be fantastic if the Papa John’s Trophy final could be pushed back to allow fans in too... we asked informally last week and have formalised the request today. Govt are saying 10,000 allowed in Wembley from 17th May."

"Nothing is set is stone in this situation but if there is a good chance of 10,000 being allowed in May then that is a chance I think fans of Tranmere and Sunderland would like to take. Nothing to lose and lots to gain?"

Tranmere are no strangers to Wembley in recent years, having appeared in three consecutive promotion play-off finals between 2017 and 2019.

Across those three visits, around 12,000-15,000 supporters made the journey to 'Prenton Park South' and should the club be successful in their efforts to push the fixture date back, would easily sell out a proposed allocation of around 4,000 tickets, as would Sunderland.
