Wirral's coronavirus weekly rate of infection is continuing to fall, latest figures show.

Public Health England data published last night states that in the seven days to January 15, 2,534 people tested positive for the virus, resulting in an infection rate of 782.1 per 100,000 people.

Although still a very high figure, that's down from a rate of 982.4 for the previous seven days, when 3,183 news cases were confirmed, bringing cautious encouragement that the borough could now be past the peak of this latest wave.

In stark contrast to less than two weeks ago, when Wirral had the highest rate of infection in the Liverpool City Region, it now has the lowest.

Knowsley currently has the highest rate of infection in not only the combined local authority, but the whole of England, with a new case rate of 1,134.8 per 100,000 people. But even that is down 498 cases from the previous seven days.

Of the 315 local areas in England, 14 (4%) have seen a rise in case rates and 301 (96%) have seen a fall, suggesting that the national lockdown is working.

The figures, for the seven days to January 15, are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).

Data for the most recent four days (January 16-19) has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.

National weekly case rate figures in full

The list has been calculated by the PA news agency based on Public Health England data published on January 19 on the Government’s coronavirus dashboard.

From left to right, it reads: name of local authority; rate of new cases in the seven days to January 15; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to January 15; rate of new cases in the seven days to January 8; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to January 8.
