A council spokesman said: "We have just been made aware that Vista Road near to Makerfield Drive, Newton-le-Willows, is flooded. Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible.

"Flood barriers have also been lowered on Peasley Cross Lane, close to the Totally Wicked Stadium."

They added: "We’ve received reports that a gathering of water on the roundabout at the junction of Mossborough Road and the Rainford Bypass is causing cars to aquaplane.

"Please take care and avoid the area if possible while we investigate."

Meanwhile, Burrows Lane at Eccleston Mere has also been closed due to flooding. The council added: "We will monitor the water levels and reopen it when it is safe to do so.

"All businesses currently open in these areas are unaffected."
