THE past 18 months - and the changing rules, facts and figures surrounding the coronavirus pandemic - has seen local news become more important than ever.

Having trusted, reliable sources of information remain essential in a world largely dominated by social media, where misinformation and fake news is so easily accessible.

Unfortunately the economic impact of the Covid crisis has affected businesses across the region and the Wirral Globe is not immune.

The Globe is not funded by the Government or a licence fee and our revenue streams – which enable us to pay our rising costs – have been under severe threat.

When lockdown restrictions were first imposed back in March 2020, contingency measures had to be put in place to ensure the continued production of our printed newspaper – that included looking at the scale of our weekly free distribution operation.

The paper has continued to operate in a tough economic climate and as a result, some changes have been made to our delivery service over the past year.

We understand that this will disappoint those in affected areas that look forward to receiving the paper each week, but a sustainable business is preferable to no business.

Crucially, the paper is available to purchase across the borough and we have expanded its availability even further this year.

Those who prefer to digest their local news online have been doing so in their thousands, with the Globe’s website producing record audience figures in 2020, with many choosing to enhance their experience further by signing up for a digital subscription.

With our continued and growing relationships between readers and local businesses, we plan to continue to deliver local news to you from a source that you have been trusting since 1973.

It is absolutely vital for our town and open democracy and we want to ensure we are still doing so long into the future.
