Tranmere Rovers have been recognised as a UK Business Hero by British Chamber of Commerce for their dedication to helping the local community during COVID-19.

Since the pandemic caused the cancellation of football fixtures they have been offering their help and support in the local community.

During this difficult time, the club have been supporting the elderly and vunerable by donating food parcels, making support phone calls and collecting prescriptions and shopping orders.

Nicola Palios, co-owner Tranmere Rovers Football club said: “We are proud to have been able to provide a lifeline to thousands of people in our local community at one of the most difficult periods in its recent history.”

Run by their community team and ably assisted by support volunteers, Tranmere donated 35,000 food parcels and provided 1,000 cooked meals to those shielding and unable to cook for themselves.

The club has also partnered up with charity, Helplink, which offers transport, practical support and friendship to elderly and vulnerable people in the Wirral area.

Over 1,000 support phone calls to vulnerable people were made by the club to help combat the feelings of isolation and loneliness many have felt during the pandemic.

They also collected and delivered 1,200 prescriptions and shopping orders to help those who were unable to leave their homes due to shielding.

Paula Basnett, CEO Wirral Chamber of Commerce said: “Tranmere Rovers have been a real asset to the community, not only supporting residents but also supporting local businesses through these unprecedented times.”

The club also offered their support to local children by running 42 educational workshops and providing workbooks to support at home learning. They also donated 100 football kits to children from financially deprived households.

Tranmere Rovers stewards also got involved by providing nearly 7,000 hours of support to the Wirral Borough Council Food Hub and helping at coronavirus test sites.

Now that football has returned, Tranmere say they will continue to offer existing support packages to vulnerable groups and is working to ensure that many of these initiatives will be in place for the future.
