Local businesses across the Wirral are stepping up to provide free school meals for children over the holidays after MP’s rejected the motion on Wednesday evening.

Since the decision, many businesses across the region are coming together to offer their support and help to ensure no child goes hungry this half term.

Here are some of the generous businesses who are kindly offering their help:

The Willow Tree, Liscard

Owners of The Willow Tree took to Facebook to offer free packed lunches for school kids this half term.

The post said: “During October half term anyone struggling to feed their school age kids can pop into the cafe and ask for a pack lunch.”

“You don't need to make a big deal about it or loudly announce it. Just come to the counter and ask if you can have one and we will make one up for you to take out. It will have a butty, fruit, crisps, a snack and a drink in the pack.”

“Please do not go hungry! Please do not struggle!”

“We are a family run business and we have four young kids ourselves. We know how hard things can get. Let's keep our kid’s tummies full this half term!”

The lunches are available for take-out only because the café is so busy.

Owner, Mrs Manning, is now accepting pay pal donations for anyone who wishes to help. You can donate to mrsmannings@outlook.com.

Aubergine Café, West Kirby

In a post on Facebook, the West Kirby cafe said: “We know many of you will share our belief that there are no circumstances when it is acceptable for children to fall victim to food poverty.”

“If you’re concerned a child you know may go hungry over the school half-term holiday, from Monday 26th to Friday 30th October, Aubergine is offering (for takeaway) a free sandwich for any local child eligible for free school meals.”

The West Kirby Café has set up a page on their website for people to register their interest.

They have said to people who are worried about being eligible: “To keep it as simple as possible: IF YOU THINK A CHILD NEEDS HELP, WE WILL TRY TO HELP.”

The Village Café, Bromborough

Owners of The Village Café are offering a variety of free hot school meals over the October half term for those who need it.

There will be a choice of sausage, chips and beans, chicken nuggets, chips and beans, or fish fingers, chips and beans.

In a post on their Facebook they stressed ‘no questions asked’.

“Simply give us a call, place your order and we will have everything ready for you to collect shortly after. No questions asked.”

“No child should go hungry this half term and this is our little way of repaying the support you have given us here at the Village Cafe during these times.”

Tilly Mint Treats, Birkenhead

Retro sweet shop, Tilly Mint Treats, are ensuring ‘local children have food and fun’ during this school half term.

They are offering fresh packed lunches to be collected from their shop for anyone who is struggling over this period.

They took to Facebook yesterday to urge those who need help to not feel ashamed or uncomfortable.

In the post they said: “We all need to help each other where we can. No child should go hungry in this country and myself and my family will not sit back and see it locally. We are all in this together.”
