A MEMBER of staff at a Wirral primary school is self-isolating at home after testing positive for coronavirus.

The news, concerning Somerville Primary School in Wallasey, was confirmed in a letter emailed to parents this morning that has been seen by the Globe.

It is also understood that all three classes in year two were also sent home at the beginning of this week.

One year six class has been told not to come in today.

The letter - from executive headteacher J Forber - says that all close contacts of the person who has tested positive have been asked to remain at home for 14 days' isolation.

It also assures parents that their children are unaffected by the situation, adding "appropriate actions have been taken and your child is safe to continue to come to school."

It reads: "There is currently a case of Coronavirus at Somerville Primary School and wish to reassure you that all measures have been put in place to ensure that all close contacts and those considered close contacts have now been informed.

"All close contacts have been asked to remain at home for 14 days isolation and I can confirm that your child is unaffected by this situation.

"I realise that this is a worrying time for families and I wish to reassure you that Government guidance has been followed and the swift action taken by the school to date have been praised by Public Health England North West.

"We have been unable to share this information with our Somerville School community until this morning, whilst Public Health England North West confirmed that no further actions needed to be taken.

"Rest assured that all appropriate actions have been taken and your child is safe to continue to come to school.

"We will continue to follow Government guidance, Public Health England's advice and our Federation risk assessment to ensure the safety of Somerville's children, staff, parents and carers."
