A former Birkenhead boxing champion has teamed up with MW Sports CIC over the summer holidays to provide young people across Wirral with the opportunity to develop their knowledge on leading a healthy active lifestyle.

Sean ‘Masher’ Dodd’s ‘Camp with the champ’ is a six week programme which has seen over 70 young people regularly attend across its three sites - Birkenhead Youth Club, Shaftesbury Youth Club and the Viking Youth Club.

MW Sports CIC was founded by Directors Michael Wilde and Stephen Murphy, as a Community Interest Company. They are not for profit and rely on funding.

Sean said: “I have known Stephen for years and when he spoke to me about this, I had no hesitation in agreeing to the project as I am really passionate about helping young people make the right decisions in life.

“I believe sport and physical activity gives people a focus that can have a positive impact in every part of their lives.

“I hope projects like this can be funded all year round, supporting all young people especially the vulnerable.”

MW Sports director Stephen Murphy added: “Sean is a great example of how sport can change the trajectory of a person’s life. I have known Sean a long time and throughout his boxing career he has always taken time to work with young people in schools or the wider community.

"During the lockdown we discussed how we could help the local community recover and came up with this idea. For young people to see someone from their area that has been to the top level in sport is inspirational and the impact of such things can’t be underestimated."
