GLOBE readers are being asked to nominate their 'High Street Heroes' - shops and businesses who went the extra mile during lockdown.

Their efforts provided a lifeline to local residents, many of whom were elderly and vulnerable, and this council campaign aims to highlight their work.

Many adapted quickly during the coronavirus pandemic and sought innovative ways to keep trading and provide vital services, for example offering a home delivery or pick-up service.

Businesses also worked long hours during a challenging time, strengthening our communities at a time when it was needed most.

Local shops and businesses can be nominated for the services they have offered, exceptional customer service they have provided or even something as simple as a warm welcome and a cheery smile.

The public are free to interpret what they think a High Street Hero looks like.

Councillor Janette Williamson said: "Throughout lockdown NHS staff and key workers were recognised as heroes, which proved to be incredibly morale-boosting for doctors, nurses and other frontline staff - and rightly so.

"This High Street Heroes campaign will recognise more of our unsung heroes - shops and businesses who have gone above and beyond during such an incredibly challenging time.

"It's only right we show them the appreciation they deserve."

The chosen businesses will become the faces of a new ‘shop local’ campaign, which aims to celebrate the shops and businesses on our local high streets and encourage the public to use them.

Cllr Williamson added: "We’re are very lucky in Wirral to have so many fantastic independent businesses.

"They've had a tough time so far in 2020, so it's vital we support them over the coming months to help them get back on their feet."

If you would like to nominate a business, email pressoffice@wirral.gov.uk with the name of the business and explain why they are your High Street Hero.
