THE Mersey Gateway bridge has been reopened after two hours of standstill traffic during rush hour.

Traffic was trapped heading from Runcorn to Widnes in what is being described as a 'police incident' this morning, Tuesday.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said it related to the safety of a man.

Traffic logs state that stationary traffic ran from the Bridgewater Expressway (Runcorn) to A557 Queensway (Widnes). There was also congestion to the Western Point Expressway with queues through Halton along the Central Expressway.

Delays were able to be seen through Warrington as traffic diverted along Chester Road.

The incident had been ongoing since around 8am where trapped traffic still remains within the closure affecting traffic crossing the bridge heading from Runcorn towards Widnes.

Police were warning drivers to avoid the area until the road reopened shortly after 10am.
