GLOBE readers can now sign up for new outdoor exercise classes.

The full timetable can be found on the Wirral Leisure website and includes activities such as Pilates, HIIT, Run in Wirral, Zumba and Revs Cycle.

Classes will be held across Wirral in a variety of outdoor spaces including Birkenhead Park, outside the Floral Pavilion and the Oval Leisure Centre.

Currently, Invigor8 memberships will remain frozen until further notice.

For now, classes will be limited to 5 people per session so anyone wanting to use the classes will need to book quickly to avoid missing out.

The council has responded to feedback from residents who have been asking for outdoor fitness classes in the absence of council-run leisure centres.

Council leisure teams are working hard behind the scenes to prepare indoor leisure centres for reopening – with significant alterations to the buildings needed to make sure they’re COVID-safe.

Some council leisure sites are also still being used as COVID-19 support centres by the Ministry of Defence and the NHS meaning they cannot currently reopen to the public.

Cllr Julie McManus, Wirral's cabinet member for community Services, said: "While we're working hard in the background getting Leisure Centres ready to open as soon as possible, we appreciate not everyone will feel comfortable returning to the gym straight away.

"Our customers told us they would like to see some outdoor classes during this period and we’ve listened.

"The online fitness classes launched during lockdown have been a lifeline to many who rely on regular exercise. Not just for their physical health, but their mental health too. I’m sure these outdoor classes will be just as popular."
