THE M53 southbound has reopened this evening, Sunday, ahead of schedule following the replacement of a 50-year-old bridge.

Work to remove and replace the footbridge over junction two of the M53 near Moreton started on Friday and the road was only set to reopen at 5am on Monday morning.

The motorway has been closed between between J1 A5139 Wallasey Dock Link South (Wallasey) and J3 A552 Woodchurch Road (Woodchurch) and diversions have been in place.

Four giant remote-controlled transporters removed the 800-tonne structure - which carries the southbound entry slip road over the motorway - during the first weekend of the 11-month project.

Without work taking place to replace the bridge, Highways England say they would need to introduce restrictions for HGVs in the future due to the bridge's ageing condition.

Engineers have been preparing the site for the work over the last few weeks.

The new bridge is due to open next summer.
