TWO youths stranded on rocks in treacherous conditions near New Brighton Lighthouse have been saved in a dramatic rescue operation.

New Brighton Lifeboat was called after reports of four youths getting into difficulties at around 3pm this afternoon.

Two of the youths had managed to make it ashore however two were still in real danger on the rocks with the incoming tide, wind and waves crashing over.

New Brighton Lifeguards' jet ski attempted to get to the youths however could not get close enough due to the conditions.

The lifeboat deployed a crew member into the water to rescue the remaining youths from the rocks and into their boat.

Youths on the beach, who were suffering from suspected hypothermia, shock and minor lacerations, were given casualty care by Coastguard rescue officers.

The Coastguard helicopter from Caernarfon was initially requested however was stood down when the youths were taken on board the lifeboat.

North West Ambulance Service and their Hazardous Area Response Team attended and checked over all youths who were transported to hospital suffering from low temperatures and minor injuries.

Wirral Globe:

North West Ambulance Service and their Hazardous Area Response Team tended the youths and took them to hospital

Michael Buratti, station officer for Wirral Coastguard Rescue Team said “This incident had the potential to be a lot worse. The quick thinking of a member of the public who called 999 and asked for the Coastguard meant that a Coastguard Rescue Team could be quickly mobilised and the assistance of the RNLI Lifeboat could be called upon.

The lifeboat worked extremely well in treacherous conditions. This incident highlights the real dangers that our coastline presents and we would urge the public to take extra care and be aware of their surrounding when visiting the coast. If you see someone in trouble on the coast, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard."
