FIREFIGHTERS are tackling a major fire at a recycling centre in Bridge Road, Bidston.

Ten fire engines and two aerial appliances are currently at the scene.

Huge plumes of smoke can be seen billowing from the fire.

Residents living nearby have been advised to keep their windows and doors shut.

Crews were called shortly before 6pm and on arrival found a large warehouse to be well alight.

Firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus, are tackling the fire, which has been split into sectors for firefighting purposes.

Area manager Gary Oakford said: "This is a well developed fire and we are likely to be at the scene for a number of hours.

"This is a largely industrial area but anyone in the vicinity should close their windows and doors as a precaution.

"The public are urged to stay away from the area where possible."

Nearby residents and businesses should keep windows and doors closed. Anyone with existing medical conditions should keep medicines close by and call

NHS 111 if any ill effects occur.
