GREEN-FINGERED volunteers have been able to keep floral displays blooming in Heswall, thanks to a funding boost.

Following 'lockdown', the hardworking volunteers at the Heswall Society and Heswall in Bloom faced a shortfall in income as, in previous years, they had relied on the generous support of the shops and traders in the town.

Instead, the three local councillors stepped in and donated £2,000 from their local budget, ensuring that the impressive floral displays around Heswall and Gayton could be maintained.

Councillor Kathy Hodson said: "The last 12 weeks have been tough for many people including some of our local community and voluntary groups that traditionally rely on fundraising at this time of year.

"It would have been a great shame had the Heswall Society and Heswall in Bloom not been able to produce their usual stunning displays around our community and so we were very keen to step in and help in any way we could.”

"Anyone who sees the work by the volunteers will, I hope, agree this is money well spent."

Steve Anderson of Heswall in Bloom added: "The Heswall Society and Heswall in Bloom team are very grateful to Wirral Council for setting aside funds for ward use and to our three local councillors for providing a grant to Heswall in Bloom from the Heswall Ward allocation.

"This money is being used to fund both the summer and winter planting for this year for all the beds and planters being looked after by the team.

"This support has been particularly important to us as we did not feel it appropriate because of the Covid-19 situation, to ask our local shopkeepers for any contribution this year".
