Campaigners in Moreton are celebrating after forcing the council’s cabinet to scrap plans that would have seen the town’s youth club axed.
Moreton Youth Club, on Pasture Road, was first established in the 1950s and generations of Moreton families have attended.
In March 2019, the cabinet announced that the whole site would be cleared and developed to make a profit for the council through its Wirral Growth Company.
Youth club users past and present immediately started a campaign for the youth club to be retained within the multi-million pound development of the site, which has already seen a community centre, adult day centre and ‘One Stop Shop’ cleared.
Moreton resident Debbie Caplin is one of the many people who attended the club and who stood in last year’s council elections on a promise to fight for it.
Debbie said: “The council should have listened to us a year ago. Instead we have seen the axe hanging over the club for more than 12 months.
"There is already a lack of facilities for teenagers in Moreton, to close this club would have been the final nail in the coffin.
“Everyone who signed petitions or the almost 800 people who liked the Facebook page set up to save the club deserve a pat on the back for forcing the Town Hall into this u-turn.
"Let’s hope the council now works with young people in Moreton to come up with a facility that they want.”
Last week the Globe revealed that the council has already consulted young people on how best to develop youth facilities at Pasture Road.
