A former dressmaker has made light of the coronavirus lockdown restrictions by celebrating her 100th birthday at home.

Muriel Dufton, from Hoylake, hit the remarkable milestone on May 26 and despite the shackles of government health restrictions, made of the most of a party at the care home where she lives.

Daughter-in-law, Barbara Dufton, told the Globe: "As a family we were going to throw a 100th birthday party for Muriel, but under lockdown we were unable to do so.

"However, Hoylake Cottage came to the rescue with a socially distanced party held in the attached day centre, which is currently not otherwise in use.

"The staff at the home had spent considerable time and effort decorating the room and afternoon tea was served together with a special birthday cake provided by the home."

Born Muriel Duggan on May 26, 1920 - the youngest of three children - Muriel’s parents had moved from the Isle of Man and her father gained employment at Cammell Laird.

She attended Temple Road School in Tranmere and learned the piano to a good standard, an interest she has continued through her life.

She subsequently attended Birkenhead School of Art and over the years has enjoyed art as a hobby.

Muriel trained to be a dressmaker and worked in Bold Street during the second world war blitz in Liverpool.

She married John (Dufton) in 1942 and they had two sons, Alan and Colin. The family initially lived in Bebington, but In 1954 the family moved to Newton when it was still a small farming village.  Sadly Muriel was widowed at the early age of 40.

Up until retirement Muriel worked as a dressmaker at Theresa Ryan’s dress shop on Banks Road, West Kirby.

Over the years the family has increased and now Muriel has four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

She has enjoyed involvement in family life and has regularly knitted and sewed garments for the children.

Muriel now lives happily at Hoylake Cottage Care Home and has been there for the past year.

Despite the current pandemic, the staff ensured that Muriel celebrated her centenary in style.
