Schools in Wirral could open as early as next week allowing some children to return to the classroom for the first time in 11 weeks.
There are also plans that could see secondary students return in the middle of this month.
Wirral Council is aiming for primary schools to reopen on June 8, followed by secondary schools on June 15 to pupils in Year 10 and Year 12.
No council in the city region agreed to reopen schools on June 1 despite the government urging teachers to begin a phased return to normal, and most local authorities have indicated that their schools are unlikely to reopen until June 15.
A spokesperson for Wirral Council said on Monday: “We have spoken to schools today and are not aware of any schools opening to more pupils.
“This week we are focussed on increasing the number of vulnerable / EHCP children in school. We will be reviewing school plans again this week.”
The Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) can confirm this review will be targeted at reopening primary schools next week and secondary schools the week after.
