Wirral secondary schools been highly praised for producing nearly 3,000 visors in a matter of weeks to help tackle coronavirus on the borough.

Schools have also donated goggles and suitable PPE equipment they had spare.

Having heard that key workers across Wirral were in need of PPE, a number of schools offered support by making hundreds of face shields and visors within the first few weeks of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Paul Boyce Corporate Director for Children’s Services said: “The fact that schools have gone above and beyond to do this to help our key workers is absolutely outstanding.

"I am unbelievably proud of all the staff and pupils involved in this effort and I know it will make a  real difference as we battle this public health emergency.

“With schools and council teams working together, this effort will go from strength to strength and make an immense difference.

“This work, coupled with all the fantastic extra support schools are already providing, is a real testament to the crucial role schools play in our communities.”

Staff and their Design Technology departments - with support from pupils still attending in some cases - made use of their own equipment and materials to help fulfil this need.

Their efforts have been given a boost with support from Wirral Council, who has advised on the sourcing of materials and has also agreed to cover the cost of the raw materials required to produce the masks.

Schools are working closely with council teams, who have also provided advice on safety requirements.

Council staff and councillors have been helping to coordinate and distribute the masks out as quickly as possible to organisations that are able to use them.

Schools that have set up their own mini production line for visors to help protect the borough’s key workers include:
