Bin workers in Wirral resumed their collections this morning after some walked out yesterday over coronavirus safety fears.

The news that Wirral’s bin collections will resume comes amid pictures of rubbish piling up in the borough.

Yesterday, Wirral Council’s outsourced refuse staff stopped collecting bins after their union Unite claimed Biffa – the company that employs them, were failing to respect social distancing and the health concerns of workers.

Unite said Biffa was still instructing crews of up to three workers to share a cab on their collection rounds.

Biffa said it strongly refutes Unite’s claim that the company had failed to take the health concerns of employees seriously.

But this morning, Biffa and the bin workers resolved their dispute and collections have resumed.

A spokesperson for Wirral Council said: “Biffa have resumed collections of green and grey bins this morning, following agreement that the current health and safety measures in place are in line with national guidance for waste collection operatives.

“Households which were due a collection yesterday (Tuesday) but have not had their bin emptied should leave their bin out at the normal collection point, as crews work to catch up.

“All other residents due a collection over the next few days, including Good Friday and Easter Monday, should put their bins out as normal by 7am on the scheduled day and leave it out until it is collected (either on the scheduled day or the day after).

“We expect all green and grey collections to be caught up by Saturday.”

Unite said this dispute is unrelated to the ongoing one over pay and conditions.
