Wirral's towns and villages remained largely deserted on Wednesday, as the public plays its role in preventing the spread of coronavirus.

Parts of Birkenhead town centre resembled a ghost town as residents followed orders to stay at home and respected social distancing guidelines.

The scenes were replicated in areas like Bromborough and Bebington, with limited activity on the streets and people who were exercising doing so at a reasonable distance.

Police performed patrols across areas of Wirral and were pleased to report that most people were complying.

Officers performed vehicle stop checks, advising motorists on the importance of following government guidance on staying at home, staying safe and only travelling when essential.

Elsewhere, West Kirby Marine Lake path has been closed to the public, although photos later emerged on social media of a small minority ignoring the barriers.

The death toll from coronavirus in England currently stands at 386 with 437 confirmed across the UK.
