NEW Brighton's iconic 'Black Pearl' pirate ship has fallen victim to the elements again after it was destroyed by high tides.

Parts of the hugely popular driftwood attraction were swept away as strong winds yesterday and overnight.

Built out of items from the beach, the ship was created by local artist Frank Lund and his friend Major Mace and attracted visitors from across the borough and beyond.

Pictures on the official Black Pearl Facebook page show ship being flooded and extent of the damage.

A message from the attraction's creators read: "We've had to say goodbye to our Pearl tonight she was a grand and much loved ship.

"An emergency Pirate meeting will have to be called at Pirate HQ to decide where to go from here.😥😥😥"

"With a relatively calm tide The Pearl looked like she shrugged off today's 10m tide.

"On closer inspection by Pirates Frank, Major and Norman unfortunately she actually sustained even further damage.

"Deck joists ripped up and will need replacing, not a problem but just a bit longer on repair".

There were also messages of support from those who have visited the attraction.

Hilary Elizabeth Cummings wrote: "Stay strong our beautiful Black Pearl".

Rita Marsh: "What a shame after all your hard work again as they say the cruel sea does damage"

Julie Hamlett commented: "Damn them dreaded winds and tides".

Barry Hoyle wrote: "It must be heat broken for all the hard work that’s gone in too it".

Hannaford Marglin Marje wrote: "They work so hard these guys, for the pleasure of the community, each time they take a step back with damage to the black pearl.

"They dig in with so much grit to get her sea worthy again.

"You are my heroes all that work on her."

Karen Henderson wrote: "Thank you, pirates. You're doing a great job caring for The Pearl.

"No matter what gets thrown at her, you're there to put her right.
