A family received a shock when they discovered an electrical wire sticking through a grape in a pack they had purchased from a Wirral supermarket.

David Bradley from Bromborough bought the punnet of seedless green grapes from the ASDA superstore in Bromborough but it was his wife who made the grim discovery on Thursday (March 5) when she was preparing their son's packed lunch for school.

Mr Bradley returned the full package to the store, where he was given a £5 voucher as a goodwill gesture.

He said: "It could have had serious consequences if we didn't spot it, we bought them earlier this week.

"They just took information and said they will send it off. They didn't seem very interested to be honest and gave me £5 for my troubles, shocking really.

"They didn't seem bothered at all. She just pulled it out and said, that's strange."

In a statement, a spokesperson said: “We always want to provide great quality products for our customers and would like to apologise that Mr Bradley’s grapes weren’t up to our usual standard on this occasion.

"We would like to reassure customers that we have had no other complaints of this nature and we have rigorous processes in place to ensure our food remains safe for our customers.

"We would like to thank Mr Bradley for bringing the grapes back to store so we can fully investigate what has happened and we are trying to make contact with him to update on our investigations, but we are pleased he received a full refund and gesture of goodwill in our Bromborough store.”
