A Wirral care home is appealing to Globe readers to send birthday cards to a leap year resident turning 100 on Saturday.

Helen Preston was born in Heswall on February 29, 1920 and lived in Birkenhead. She moved to Prestatyn when she married but later came back to Wirral to be closer to her children and is now residing at Grove House care home in Claughton.

But sadly, both of her sons have since passed away, leaving her with no immediate family in the local area. She has a step-daughter and two granddaughters - Ursula and Vanessa - who live elsewhere in the country.

Now the Globe and staff at Grove House are appealing to readers to give Helen the big day she deserves by sending the former accountant and fruit stall worker cards to mark her landmark birthday.

Grove House Activities co-ordinator Candice Connell said: "She is very happy and looks marvellous for nearly 100 years old.

"We are having a celebration for Helen on Saturday and some of the staff are even coming in on their day off to be part it and help make the day special for her."

If you would like to give Helen a birthday card please send it at the earliest possible convenience to the following address:
