MAJOR works to repair a bridge in Culcheth started today, Monday.

Temporary traffic lights have been put in on the Aikin Knowles Bridge on Holcroft Lane while the repair and drainage work takes place.

Work will take place between 9.15am and 3.15pm from Monday to Saturday with temporary traffic lights put in.

The road will be fully open to traffic outside these times.

The second phase of work will star on April 4, firstly with a road closure for one day, followed by temporary traffic lights for a further two weeks. It will also be necessary to close Holcroft Lane on Saturday, April 11.

A spokesman said: "Depending on the scope of works and traffic flows it may be necessary to use a convoy vehicle alongside the temporary traffic signals to ensure safety past these works."

There will be no through route from Culcheth to Glazebrook and A57 along Holcroft Lane when the road is closed.

Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.
