OFFICERS at the Prison Corruption Unit have welcomed the sentencing of a former prison officer who had a sexual relationship with an armed robber at Wrexham's HMP Berwyn prison.

At the time of her arrest Ayshea Gunn, 27, of Johnstown, Wrexham, was employed at HMP Berwyn as a Prison Officer, where she started an inappropriate relationship with an inmate, 29 year-old Khuram Razaq.

Officers from the Prison Corruption Unit at the North West Regional Organised Crime Unit (NWROCU) and Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service welcomed the 12 month sentence handed to Gunn yesterday (Monday, December 23).

Gunn was arrested in November 2018 on suspicion of misconduct in a public office.

She pleaded guilty to the offence and was jailed for 12 months at Mold Crown Court.

Khuram Razaq, who is currently serving a sentence for conspiracy to rob, pleaded guilty to possession of prohibited articles and was jailed for an additional eight months.

Detective Inspector Dawn Hampson, from NWROCU, said: "We have worked closely with Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service to tackle the problem of corruption within prisons.

"We want to reassure the honest, dedicated and hardworking staff that work in our prisons that we will continue to take action against people who choose to engage in corrupt activity.

"Those who choose to offend in such a way are not above the law and we urge staff to be aware of the warning signs and to report any type of inappropriate behaviour so that we can take action to bring them to justice."
