DRIVERS are being warned that a part of the M53 could be closed for the next five hours after a crash.
Emergency services are currently on scene at M53 southbound at junctions 4 to 5 near Clatterbridge after a crash involving two HGVs.
It is believed that one of the HGVs was carrying soya which spread across the motorway.
Highways England are urging drivers to find alternative routes to prevent delays.
Drivers are being urged to leave the M53 at junction 4 and follow the route marked with a yellow diamond symbol on road signs.
This will take traffic south on the B5151.
At the junction of B5133 turn left and head east on that road to its junction with the A41.
Merseyside Police say that they will provide an update when the carriage is clear but have warned it could be closed for the next four to five hours.
Police patrols are trying to release trapped traffic but are warning anyone caught up in backlog to not leave the motorway in the wrong direction.
Further information regarding the incident on M53 - Southbound junctions 4-5 are closed for the next 4-5 hours. Please avoid to prevent traffic build up and delays.
