WIRRAL residents are likely to have to wait until the morning for running water, after being without a water supply for more than 24 hours.

Members of the public have been queuing up at Prenton Park, the home of Tranmere Rovers, throughout the day to pick up bottled water supplied by United Utilities, after problems with water supply began last night.

Residents in the Prenton area, with postcodes CH41, CH42, CH43 and CH63 have been without a water supply since around 8pm yesterday.

United Utilities has been working to fix the problem throughout the day but as of yet, the issue remains the same.

Long queues had formed today at Prenton Park, with bottled water being handed out, but the site closed at 4pm.

Bottled water provision was then set up at Scottish Power, Prenton Way, and Sainsburys, 342 Woodchurch Road, but closed at 9pm.

The latest update from United Utilities said that residents will now have intermitent water supply, but asked people to use it sparingly.

A spokesman for United Utilities said: “While we have repaired the leak which first caused the problem, we’re still completing tests on the water supply to ensure it is of the quality and standard expected before it can be turned on at the tap.

"It will be several hours before we have all the results of these tests and so it is likely to be the early hours of the morning, at the earliest, before we are able to restore your water supply. We’ll be working throughout the night to make sure we complete all the work necessary as quickly as possible.

"Our fleet of `Water on Wheels` tankers will remain in the area throughout the night to try to restore water to as many people as possible.  If you do have water you may notice your water pressure may be lower than usual or may go on and off as we move the tankers around the area.

"We have noticed that the water that we are putting into the pipes to restore the water supply is being used more quickly than we would expect.  We know that as your water supply may be intermittent you may be filling up some bottles to make sure that you’ve got enough water for throughout the evening.  We would appreciate your support in considering how much water you need and not to store excess amounts.

"We know how much inconvenience this will be causing. We are doing all we can to get things back to normal and to ensure water is of the quality you expect."
