TRANMERE Rovers' boss Micky Mellon has added to the team by signing former Bury central-midfielder Neil Danns until the end of the current League One season.

The Liverpudlian was part of Bury's promotion-winning squad last season.

The former Crystal Palace man brings a wealth of experience to the Rovers ranks, having played more than 500 times.

Capped by Guyana at international level, Danns, who started his career in the youth set-up of Blackburn Rovers, turned professional at Ewood Park in 2000.

Since then, he has played in the top four tiers of English football and is eligible to make his Rovers debut when they host Burton Albion at Prenton Park on Saturday afternoon.

During a 19-year career in the professional game so far, the Liverpudlian counts Blackpool, Hartlepool United, Colchester United, Birmingham City, Crystal Palace, Leicester City, Bristol City, Huddersfield Town, Bolton Wanderers and Bury.

Danns has won promotion four times to date, tasting success from League One with Colchester in 2006, Birmingham in the Championship in 2007, before two Sky Bet League Two promotions in the past three seasons at Blackpool (2017) and Bury (2019).

He represented Guyana at the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup, featuring in the group stage of the tournament, where he scored three times.

After signing his Rovers contract, Danns said: "Once I was given the opportunity to come down and meet the manager, it is a Club that straight away I wanted to be a part of.

"What the lads have achieved so far with back-to-back promotions is unbelievable and you can see why they have done that when you speak to the manager because he has got a real appetite for football and that matches my own.

"Hopefully I can bring experience and when the fans see me, they'll see the energy and appetite that I do play the game with, I've got that hunger and that drive."

On his new signing, manager Micky Mellon said: "Neil Danns is a player that I have admired for a long time, he is a bit behind in fitness levels, but we are quickly catching that up, and he has an appetite to get fit very fast and he will do that.

"When anybody becomes available who we think can help us along and keep the consistency and tempo, then we will do that."

During a press conference at Rovers' Solar Campus training ground ahead of tomorrow's game, Mellon said his team was very much "in development" as their League One campaign progresses.

He said: "There's loads to improve; we need to get better at crossing. Even if we're getting clean sheets, we have to keep improving.

"My job is to make a group of players that is very competitive for League One. It is a developing team.

"So many of them have not played in League, for some it's been a while since they have.

"I have to make them play at the tempo that this level demands."

He also hinted that there there was always scope to bring in new players to bolster the squad.

"If anybody is available to come and help us keep consistency then I will consider them."
