A WOMAN was pulled from the River Mersey by a policeman after her car entered the water near Rock Ferry promenade.

Emergency services were called to nearby the Refreshment Rooms in Tranmere at around 7.30pm on Thursday, September 12 following reports of a car in the water.

A police officer entered the River Mersey and pulled a woman, in her forties, out of the car as it began to sink further.

He was aided by a second officer.

The woman was then taken to hospital by North West Ambulance Service paramedics and has been retained under the Mental Health Act.

With the car fully submerged, the police dive team used an underwater pole camera to check the vehicle for other passengers.

After some assistance from Marine Fire One it was deemed inpossible to search due to poor underwater visibility.

Coastguard Mud Technicians returned to the scene at low water to carry out a full search and found no-one else inside.

The car was then recovered from the scene.
