LARGE flames coming from the Stanlow Refinery in Ellesmere Port this afternoon are not a cause for alarm.

A short power cut has been blamed for the reason behind the fire seen at the refinery and the alarm sounds which have been reported near the site.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed to The Standard it was not an emergency and a representative from the refinery had been in contact with the fire service "out of courtesy" to explain the situation.

A CFRS spokesperson said: "They have had a power cut and said there will be a bit of flaring for a couple of hours."

ScottishPower, which supplies power to the area, confirmed on social media there had been a power cut in the Frodsham, Helsby, Ince, Stanlow, Crowton, Kingsley, Cuddington and Norley areas on Wednesday morning.

The company confirmed the power cut had been fixed at 11.43am.
