CHESHIRE West and Chester Council's StreetCare team joined forces with residents in Neston to transform an alleyway in Raby Road.

Members of the Street Maintenance Action Response Team (SMART) swooped into action when Neston Town Council asked for their help.

The alleyway was not adopted and had been targeted by fly-tippers, it was also overgrown with weeds.

The alleyway before the team started work

Tom, Karl and Paul from the team tackled all the overgrown vegetation and fly tipping, a total of three tonnes was removed from the alleyway in one day. They are now planning to treat it for weed control.

The team also contacted colleagues in Regulatory Services regarding the fly-tipping problem and an investigation is now in progress.

Councillor Karen Shore, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Environment, Highways and Strategy Transport, said: "Our SMART team provides a fast, reactive maintenance service that can respond to requests quickly and effectively. Having these members of staff ready for action means existing officers will not be called away from planned day-to-day street cleaning or maintenance operations.

"This is a perfect example of everyone working together for our Love Your Streets campaign - what a wonderful result."

A local resident has since contacted the team and said: "I have seen the great work your team has done, I really do appreciate it and hope we can keep our alleyway clean and tidy for the future. I am really pleased with the resulting effort and how well this issue has been handled. Please pass on my thanks to the rest of the team."
